According both the calendar and my memory from last year, it seems today is Mother's Day. A wonderful way to pay homage to those who gave birth to us, even if they aren't with us right now. Were it not for them, we wouldn't even be here today. I'm sure this applies not only to biological mothers, but virtually any mother figure in your life.

Now that a lot of this month's New Feathers have started getting settled, I hope to see the younger ones attending school soon. Participation isn't obligatory, of course. However, I find that the classes are always worthwhile. There isn't a day when I don't learn more interesting tidbits about other worlds. Of course, aside from students, we're also more than willing to accept new teachers at any time.

[If Gelda's housemate were to take a peek inside her room, he'd find her sitting on the bed, a faint smile tugging at her lips. She's looking at the Mother's Day card Chrome gave her last year.

And of course, anyone else is free to visit if they feel the need to bother her.]

[No, no, that's not it at all! He's just trying to be polite, that's all. 8( He's not Zelos, who has no problems getting up-close and personal right away.]

No, I did not, though I recall you mentioning her before.

[His eyes soften slightly.]

What was she like?

[Well, we can't all be like Freud. Not even Gelda can claim to be an expert at analyzing people's behavior. Her fingers fiddle with the card in her lap again while she speaks.]

When she first arrived in Luceti, she was just a young child. I took her in and cared for her. I suppose that's why she came to view me as a mother.

[He's spotted the card, but he isn't going to ask what it is just yet. Given the subject of conversation, he has a sneaking suspicion as to the contents... if she wants to show him, she will. It's not his place to pry.]

I see... I can think of no finer person for her to have chosen than yourself. She was very lucky indeed to have someone like you while she was here.

[The corners of her lips twitch just slightly. She can't give an all too genuine smile at this, because she certainly does miss her would-be daughter.]

You really think so?

I wouldn't have said so if I did not mean it.

[Her fingers snap the card shut again, but she's still fiddling with it slightly.]

Is that...?

[He trails off, letting her decide for herself whether or not she wants to show it to him.]

Hm?

[She glances down at the card. Then, with a faint smile, holds it out for Regal to take.]

She made it for me, last year.

[Gently he takes the card from her to examine it, holding it very carefully to avoid damaging it.]

For Mother's Day, I assume?

[Now he's starting to regret that he never got that chance to meet Chrome himself before she was sent home.]

Yes, exactly.

[She can't help but notice the way Regal's holding it as if it's a frail treasure. He really is too kind.]

[Well, he knows that he has to be careful of his own strength at times; more than once he's grabbed something a bit too hard without thinking about it. He opens it to look inside.]

... it is remarkable how such close bonds can form in such a short amount of time here.

It is, isn't it? I suppose it comes from living in such a small community.

[He won't find anything specific inside. Probably just a heart drawn with crayons or something like that. Details were never provided by Chrome-mun. Even so, it's the gesture that counts and said gesture was lovely.]

It's a bit of a surprise to someone like myself... my entire life was spent as a part of high society, so I did not get many chances to see what smaller villages and towns were like. In retrospect, I suppose I missed out on a great deal.

[Once he's looked at it, he's going to shut the card.]

[She won't be demanding the card back immediately, though. He can return it whenever he feels like it.]

Well, one is never too old to learn about it, correct?

That is correct.

[He sets the card beside him on the bed and rests his hands in his lap.]

Still, to think that I have lived my entire life so unaware of something so important...

We can't have everything in our life. We can only have what fate has in store for us.

[She pauses for a moment, before continuing.]

Well, that's what was believed in my world, in any case.

That's what I believed as well - that we were bound by fate - until I met Lloyd. Somehow he managed to defy fate to save both of our worlds, even when everyone said it was impossible.

Fate is an awfully subjective term, really. If it can be changed, then is it really fate at all? Or was the fact that we turned things around a hidden part of our fates as well?

I'd prefer to believe that we are able to decide our own futures. That is what Lloyd... no, what all of us fought for: the ability to make that decision for ourselves.

Then, that would mean fate wouldn't exist at all. After all, if you were to be able to decide everything by yourself, there would be no such thing as having a destiny.

[His glance strays over to the card beside him.]

Was it fate that we were brought here, then?

Who knows? My fate was written down in the Score and made no mention of another world. However, there were parts of the Score that even those in the Order of the Lorelei weren't allowed to view. Aside from that, considering the Score is the planet's memory, Luceti might not influence it at all.

[Oh, this is all just too confusing. Theorizing won't do too much good either.]

In any case, I don't think it matters. As long as we're here, we can work to determine our own futures. It may all just be part of our fates, but we won't have anything to lose by doing so.

In that sense, this may be the freest some of us have ever been. If nothing else, it has taught me not to take anything for granted and to treasure what I have, something I rarely thought about in my world.

[At last he lifts his eyes to look at her.]

However, it has also left me with many questions about my future.

[She simply meets his gaze with another smile.]

It's the same for me. The future has never been as uncertain as it is here in Luceti. Even so, I've grown to appreciate this new independence. It leaves me free to dedicate my time to whatever or whomever I want.

[Yes, she left that hint in there on purpose. Dare you confront her about it, Regal? She certainly hopes so.]

[Oh, he caught the hint all right, and it's made him curious. Much to his surprise, he finds he's almost... nervous about it, somehow. What the heck, Regal, you're not fifteen.]
